Commented Issue: Issues with IEEE (Alphabetical) Style [8103]

<p>I have created a review paper with over 190 references using the IEEE (Alphabetical) Style sheet. In Word 2007 and 2010, there are no issues with using a .docx file. However, if I try to create a pdf of the file, the pdf converter often crashes. As well, I cannot convert the file into an .doc file as it will crash the programme. There seems to be some issues with this particular style sheet, since if I change the style sheet say to APA everything is okay and there are no problems with creating a pdf or converting to .doc file. As well, if I try to convert all the references to static text, I get blank results or general failures in the conversion.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Thank you.</p>

There is a bug on IEEE style (the one sorted by numbers at least), regarding URLs. When they are long enough that they need to be broken in order to pass to the second line, the column of numbers breaks, because the link was not actually broken by word and I think it creates problems on the table formatting. Probably that is what is causing the crashes.

I am devolipng that style for my own use and my university and I solved it with the option to break by "\" character. ;-)
I already sent an email two months ago to Yves, offering to publish this style, but I haven't received an answer yet...

New Post: Removing unused citations in Word for Mac 2011

I have some unused citations that I want to remove from the Bibliography. The macro given in http://bibword.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Styles_FAQ#Q11 does not work on Word for Mac 2011.

Is there a workaround?

Thanks.

Thank you very much for your effort, Yves. This is just a great system. :) One thing that I would love to have, was the possibility of adding the page number of a particular citation (inline) independent of what is at the reference. For instance, consider this piece of text: "Some authors prefer to do it this way [1], others prefer that way [2, pp. 42-58]." The second case is what I wanted. I don't know how to do it... :( Another thing is how to change the colour of the hyperlinked numbers of citations? (the [1] and [2] in the above example) I've already checked the code that is suposed to do that, and I changed the hyperlink style, but nothing changes... Thanks again!

Hi,

first of all, thanks for the great work! you really make the life of students a lot easier:))

So here's my problem - this is probably an easy fix, however i'm new to the subject so please bear with me:)

I successfully added AMA style to Word, however when i add page numbers to a citation they are not showing up. is there a way to fix this?

Thanks alot in advance, cheers!

New Post: IEEE style: in text citation does not include page numbers?

Many thanks to you, Yves!

I spend lots of time trying to understand how to do this… because I didn’t know the name of the variable which keeps the citation page numbers... Well, this was exactly what I was looking for. I already used it, and it works. :)

However, now I have another problem, with word itself (I’m using Windows Word 2010).

Apparently it is using Heading 1 style for creating citations (I don't know why).

But this has two problems for me:

1. My H1 style is using Small Caps, so instead of the "pp." I'm getting "PP." which is against all rules, and I must change it... :(

2. I also can't change the colour of the linked citation to the same one I'm using everywhere (whenever it's a link). I managed to do that for the references list, by changing the CSS style, but it doesn't work for this.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

As for the fact that this is not compliant with the IEEE format, I’m afraid that is not correct.

You can check the IEEE Editorial Style Manual (http://www.ieee.org/documents/stylemanual.pdf, page 5) or the IEEE Citation Reference (http://www.ieee.org/documents/ieeecitationref.pdf, page 7) to see that both give these examples on the citation section:

[3, Th. 1]; [3, Lemma 2]; [3, pp. 5-10]; [3, eq. (2)]; [3, Fig. 1]; [3, Appendix I]; [3, Sec. 4.5]; [3, Ch. 2, pp. 5-10]; [3, Algorithm5].

So it’s clearly supported, although not much used by most authors, but that’s another matter. :)

Thanks and keep up the great work.

I have a 64 bit machine and I downloaded the Vancouver style reference code and cannot access it because it is locked. How do I unlock it?

Thanks

Sorry for delay in reply,

I mean I download the file and save it to the following location on my machine:

program files (x86)/microsoft office/office14/bibliography/style

The referencing style doesn't appear in word, noe can i find it in the above location.

However, when I come to download a new version, in the window where I can choose the location to save the file, the first verion is there, but has a little padlock symbol on the image next to its name.

Just to reiterate, I am downloading the Vancouver style onto a 64-bit machine

Thanks

Never mind - fixed it myself, for anyone who is facing the same problem:

replace all occurences of

<format>{%CitationPrefix%}%RefOrder%{%CitationSuffix%}</format>

with

<format>{%CitationPrefix%}%RefOrder%{(p%CitationPages:p.:%)}{%CitationSuffix%}</format>

That's it - will result in [INDEX](pPAGENUMBERS) format.

Cheers!

New Post: Changing the way authors are reported in Vancouver style

$

Hi all,

I've found the BibWord stuff really useful so far but have just noticed that in my bibliography, wherever I've put "et al" in the citation source, it shows up as "ea" in the reference list. Is there any way of changing it so that it remains as "et al"?

As an example, I havea source by Poirier P, Marois L et al that shows up in the Bibliography like this:

Poirier P, Marois Lea. Diastolic Dysfunction in Normotensive Men with Well-Controlled Type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes Care. 2001 January; 24(1): p. 5-10

Is there any way at all to make it Poirer P, Marois L et al?

Forgive me, I imagine this may be quite a simple task but it's completely stumped me. I'd greatly appreciate any help anybody could give.

Hi Andy,

Greetings from Johannesburg, South Africa!

I was working with BibWord’s Vancouver style sheet last night and didn’t have any problem with et al.

The Style Sheet processes this when you input the names of more than6 authors.

You shouldn’t type in et al yourself in the name line because the style sheet thinks this is a name and then abbreviates it to initials = ‘ea’.

(You may get away with typing the names and ‘et al’ in the Corporate Author name line: I haven’t tried that.)

You have to type in ALL 7 or more names to get it to output the first author, followed by et al.

Here is an example given in “International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Sample References”:

(The colour highlighting was put in by me for my own reference.)

More than six authors:

Rose ME, Huerbin MB, Melick J, Marion DW, Palmer AM, Schiding JK, et al. Regulation of interstitial excitatory amino acid concentrations after cortical contusion injury. Brain Res. 2002;935(1-2):40-6.

Style Sheet output =

Rose ME, Huerbin MB, Melick J, Marion DW, Palmer AM, Schiding JK, et al. Regulation of interstitial excitatory amino acid concentrations after cortical contusion injury. Brain Res. 2002;935(1-2):40-46.

Your source example of ‘Poirier P, Marois L et al’ indicates that the version of Vancouver for this uses et al for three or more sources.

As stated above, ICMJE uses et al for more than 6.

You can edit the BibWord style sheet to output et al for more than 2 authors.

To edit the code, open it in Notepad (or any other program which edits code).

In the<namelists> section in the code, you will see the following section:

<listname="author"id="1">

<single_prefix></single_prefix>

<multi_prefix></multi_prefix>

<corporate>{%Corporate%}</corporate>

<first_person>{%Last% }{%First:a%}{%Middle:a%}</first_person>

<other_persons>{%Last% }{%First:a%}{%Middle:a%}</other_persons>

<separator_between_if_two>,</separator_between_if_two>

<separator_between_if_more_than_two>,</separator_between_if_more_than_two>

<separator_before_last>,</separator_before_last>

<max_number_of_persons_to_display>6</max_number_of_persons_to_display>

<number_of_persons_to_display_if_more_than_max>6</number_of_persons_to_display_if_more_than_max>

<overflow>, et al.</overflow>

<single_suffix></single_suffix>

<multi_suffix></multi_suffix>

</list>

All you have to do is change the >6< to >2< in both places. Be careful not to include any spaces, e.g. > 2<.

This should work, but coding can be fussy when you start editing it.

I hope this helps. As usual, no warranties are given, and any changes you do are at your own risk.

New Post: Customize APA for showing two authors' names

$

Hi

I'm using the APA style for my reprots but there are a few things which I need to change. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated:

1- If there are two authors, I'd like to show the names of both, and for more that two, use the fist oneet al.

2- Instead of "&" in the citation, use 'and'

3- To remove the space before and after the citation.  For example, sometime I cite a reference at the beginning of a sentence and show it as Authour (Year), and I figured to repeat one citation twice, once showin the name and once the year, but there is a space around the Year which I'd like removed.

4- To make the 'et al.' italics

5- Sometimes, I cite agencies which have abbreviated names, and I cite using the abb. but the reference shows the full title.  Is there a way around this?

Thanks a lot

Zahra

In response to the last two posts:  as far as I know, this has not been resolved.  Yves, I'm curious to know if there has been any progress concerning this issue.  Have you had an opportunity to look at the XSL file I sent?  Or have you learned anything new?  Thanks

Sorry but I can't find the XSL if you send it to me. Please try again. Mail it to the mail address you can find in the bibword XSL files.

That is not a BibWord style, so you will have to do some puzzling to get things the way you want.

I suggest you start from the template formatPersonsAuthor and the ones directly above and below it in the code. They look the most promising for handling problem 1, 2 and 4.

Regarding problem 3, the space has nothing to do with the in-text citation formatting. It's part of the way fields are used in Word. Search this forum for a suggested workaround.

Regarding your last point. The full name can only be shown if you entered the full name somewhere. Word is not intelligent enough to expand your abbreviation into a full name. So wherever you entered the fullname, enter the abbreviated name instead and you should be set.

Thanks for styles.

At first glance, there are two new fields in the XSL.

An XslVersion number which is basically the version of the style (6 for APA 6th edition, 15 for Chicago 15th edition, ...) as far as I can derive from the examples I have.

The second one is StyleNameLocalized which is the name of a style hardcoded for every language Word has for UI (very bad design, especially since they have a localization tree for everything else). I'm guessing a single value will do here.

So, if anyone would be so kind to test the following and report back on success/failure (I don't have Office 2013, so I'm flying blind):

In the BibWord XSL you are using, look for the following lines:

<!-- Handle the different types of input documents. --><xsl:templatematch="/"><xsl:choose><!-- Gets the name of the style as it will be displayed in Word 2007. --><xsl:whentest="b:StyleName">

And then change them to (basically you are injecting a few extra lines)

<!-- Handle the different types of input documents. --><xsl:templatematch="/"><xsl:choose><!-- Sets a dummy version number. --><xsl:whentest="b:XslVersion"><xsl:text>10</xsl:text></xsl:when><!-- We do not do localization, just use the default name. --><xsl:whentest="b:StyleNameLocalized"><xsl:value-ofselect="msxsl:node-set($data)/general/stylename"/></xsl:when><!-- Gets the name of the style as it will be displayed in Word 2007. --><xsl:whentest="b:StyleName">

Please report back on success and/or failure. Only with your input I can adapt all styles to work with Word 2013.

Yves,

I am very grateful for your help!  This worked beautifully once I found the correct directory to add the updated XSL spreadsheet into.  It is different from my Windows 7 machine.  On my Surface (which uses Windows RT) I have to put it into the following directory:
C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Bibliography\Style
Only this directory would work.  I'm not sure what the others are for, especially since they have copies of the default XSL sheets in them.  In any case, this worked, and I am a very happy Word 2013 user.  This was the only major limitation I was facing on my Surface RT.
Thanks again, a hundred times over.

I'm glad it works.

I'll do my best to update all styles later this week.

Thanks for testing.
